About the Von Lee
Bloomington’s historic Von Lee theatre was built in 1928 as “The Ritz,” a name shared with a nearby barbershop. It was designed by Bloomington’s first local architect, John Nichols (1859–1929), in an eclectic take on the Spanish Colonial Revival style.
In 1930, the building became “Peterson’s Market” and was a grocery store until 1948, when the Vonderschmidt family converted the building to cinema use again and renamed it the Von Lee. It remained a cinema until 2000, becoming known for its art and independent film selections.
The former three-screen theatre is now a three-story building with the original preserved exterior and a replica of the original Von Lee sign.
The Von Lee is the first building in Bloomington and only the sixth in the state registered for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “green” certification, a benchmark for environmentally sustainable construction.
