Creative Services Creates Web Site for IEEE e-Science Conference

March 26, 2008

Finally, science and creativity meet.

Yesterday the Office of Creative Services launched a Web site to promote the fourth annual IEEE International Conference on e-Science. Scheduled for December 2008 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel in Indianapolis, the e-Science conference will attract leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, as well as developers and e-Science applications users.

Dave Harper, interactive art director, used technology to create a computer-generated illustration that would appeal to the conference’s audience. The illustrations resemble simulations used in computer science. “The abstract illustration serves as a visual accent for the Web site,” says Harper. “The style of the illustration is based on the work of Joshua Davis, a digital artist who creates dynamic abstractions, which are random action script-generated compositions.”

The new site also offers downloadable promotional materials. Supporters can download e-Science badges to promote the conference on their own Web sites. Visitors can use the online form to send information to friends or colleagues, or they can sign up to receive e-mail updates or announcements about the conference.

The new media team will add multimedia features, including photo upload capabilities, a blog for participants, and a live video stream of all presentations. To publish the live stream, Creative Services will collaborate with UITS Media Design and Production. We’ll also publish a welcome video from this year’s conference chair, Geoffrey Fox. During the conference, participants will be able to upload their videos and photos to the Web site.

The e-Science conference is sponsored this year by Pervasive Technologies Labs, Microsoft, and Indiana University. Attendees will present the results of their latest research and product developments.

The Creative Services print team is also partnering with IEEE to create all promotional materials for the conference, from magazine advertisements to event programs for participants. The print materials will follow the Web site’s design. The fourth annual IEEE International Conference on e-Science is the first conference Creative Services has ever promoted.

We know it’s science, but all this promotional work has convinced us that science is fun. Now, where are our tickets?
