May 1, 2007

The Webby Awards, the leading international honor for the Web, today named "10 Ways IU is Red Hot" for the Best Web site in the School category for 2007. The work was produced by the Indiana University Office of Creative Services.

Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards event is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including Websites, Interactive Advertising, Online Film & Video, and Mobile Websites. The awards are judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a global organization that includes Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, business guru and author Tom Peters, The Body Shop president Anita Roddick, fashion designer Max Azria, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, and Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser.

"The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "'10 Ways IU is Red Hot' is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."

"This is an exciting achievement for Indiana University, and I’m very proud of our team,” said IU’s Marcia Busch-Jones, director of the Office of Creative Services. “We were competing against some impressive Web sits created by major agencies, but the fact that we won speaks to the creative abilities of our staff.”

Rebecca Salerno, associate director for new media, added, “The Web is a major communications channel for IU now and will become even more so in the future. This achievement means we’re headed in the right direction because we’re getting international attention for Indiana University.”

The 11th Annual Webby Awards received a record 8,000 entries from all 50 states and more than 60 countries.

Founded in 1996, The Webby Awards is known worldwide for its famous five-word acceptance speeches.

Other nominees in the School category were Ex’pression College for Digital Arts, the School of Visual Arts, Full Sail Real World Education, and Trinity University. All were prepared by commercial agencies. Webby winners in other categories include Volvo, the Wall Street Journal, Sony, Flickr, Verizon Dave Matthews Band, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, the Smithsonian National Archive, Mercedes Benz, BBC News, and Pan’s Labyrinth.

The office launched the site in 2006 as part of a larger “IU is Red Hot” campaign, based upon Newsweek magazine’s naming Indiana University as the “hottest big state school.”
